Dunga Beach located along Lake Victoria, Kenya is a hub for fishing, boating, and tourism but faces severe threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. A 2018 International Union for Conservation of Nature report revealed 86 of 234 native fish species in the basin are threatened. On 19th November 2024, the YDoS team, led by Claudius Mbuya, mobilized youth volunteers for a clean up and sustainability summit, which led to the removal of 0.275 tons of plastic waste, educated market traders on sanitation and conservation, and planted 700 tree seedlings to address climate change.
Today, Dunga Beach is cleaner and there is an improved consciousness among the residents around the Beach area to take action to protect their environment, thereby mitigating climate change impacts on the beach and the environment at large.
